Mystery From The Deep

What is it?  I know that's what you are thinking.  And frankly, so am I.  This little sea-ling washed up, quite sick unfortunately, on the shore of the beach.  I'm throwing it out there for anyone who likes to do a little research or has a marine biology background to put a name to this fella.

Grace us with your knowlegde!

Sydney And The Whalebird

I have recently joined a not for profit organization that groups together young foster children with people whom love to read.  I finally have a good excuse to be in the children's section of the library, since I have started with my reading buddy.

I am in love with with Sydney and the Whalebird by David Elliot.  Just one of the many books I have borrowed.  It is a great adventure story of a lovable penguin who can't stop inventing.  Until one day he gets his friend Bill the Whale beached on the land.  He quickly comes  to Bill's rescue with yet another ingenious idea, a seaweed parachute. You don't think it's going to work until that wonderful moment when Bill is slowly lifted off the ground!  They fly over the ocean and back into safety.

I would love to hear about your favorite books as a child, or the books you are reading to your children.

Comedians Are Supposed To Be Funny

Is it fair to expect a comedian to be funny....all the time?  That's a loaded question, I realize.  More to the point.  I am reading the biography of a certain British comedian whom I want to love and continue to think is wonderful.  However, I have approximately 20 pages left of her biography written in the form of personalized letters and I haven't really laughed.  Okay, so there were two parts that made me giggle...

I guess this disappointment, well more of a let down, is due to the fact that I projected my expectations of this particular comedians previous performances and interviews (where she was always funny) and allowed myself to think that her whole, quite normal life would be a roller coaster of giggles to guttural, belly aching, painful smile - laughing.  But such is not the case.

I don't want to be rude, I mean she is amazing and interesting.  There really is no other way to say it - she's just so normal.

I did like the book.  I can appreciate her efforts to come out with emotional and trying times in ones life with brutal honesty and a 'glass is half full' attitude.  That is something to be admired.  She also has a good use of language.

So back to the original question.  My answer is yes, I do expect a comedian to be funny all the time.  Just like you expect your hairstylist to have good hair all the time!  So,who's bio did I read?  Well, it's called Dear Fatty.

I Stumbled Upon This

"The Complexity Of Fall"

I read about mermaids and I cross stitch birds. I paint cabinets, collect orange boxes and volunteer with the kiddies. I am curious about other people and their source of inspiration. I cut hair and keep moments locked in pictures. I love colour and faeries and make up and dictionaries.  I would call myself an artist, writer and some kind of photographer, but I find labels much too limiting.  And so far, I am loving this journey.

Dear Natalia, Thank You

The following is a copy of a thank you letter to my bestest bud Natasha.  She sent me a beautiful birthday gift this week and I wanted to share the experience with you.

April 16, 2009

Dearest Natalia,

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!  You are such a thoughtful and beautiful friend.  Your timing of my birthday gift couldn't have been planned better!  You just never know with the post these days eh?!

Speaking of the post...You are probably wondering why I even opened my birthday gift prior to my birth - date.  Well, I must explain a little situation.

Your parcel arrived beautifully squished into the perfect shape of my mailbox.  I looked for the return address to see who this package was from, but it was nowhere to be found due to a large blue sticker taped to death that carried a simple message reading: Please open immediately.  Quarantine documents enclosed.  Well!  thought I, Surely they know my birthday isn't for another few days but it's clear there is a surprise in this package that quarantine doesn't want me to miss.  Open it, I shall.

Settling inside on the couch with my lumpy, squished package I slowly peel back the tape.  This time in gift opening is generally a cherished moment but it sort of looses it's sparkle after battling an ever growing tape ball for 5 minutes.  I finally get it open, pour the contents onto my lap along with a small novel's worth of 'important looking documents' that I toss aside.

I pick up the unwrapped gifts, assuming there is colourful ribbon and matching paper in the bins at quarantine office and I start to get that 'special day' feeling.  A round jar of ginger tea and strainer.  What a thoughtful  and delicious gift.  Natasha, you spoil me!  I read through your kind words of well wishing  and the description of how these 2 jars of tea are your absolute favorite....Hang on...2 jars of tea???  There is only 1 jar of tea...

I remember about the ' important looking documents' that are now in my recycle bin and I fish them out.

ATTN: MISS HAIRY FAERY.

INTERNATIONAL MAIL:NOTICE OF INTENTION TO SEIZE GOODS

Hmmmm.... This looks important.....So I read on....

The items listed above....blah blah....inspected at Sydney....blah .....Authorized quarantine officer...blah blah..... in accordance with sub section 68(3) blah blah blaha......items will be seized and destroyed....SEIZED AND DESTROYED?

So there you have it Natalia, your beautiful tea has been seized into the questioning room, sweating to answer the the right questions about it's intended stay in Australia.  Closely scrutinized by the tip of a nuclear laser beam ready and willing to vaporize the toxic mass that clearly only the Canadian hard eating culture has the stomach lining for...All because it contains lemon peels...That, or it's on the shelf in the staff room at quarantine.

So, I will enjoy my ginger tea, and I look forward to sharing a cup on the balcony with you too.

Love you, miss you

Hairy Faery

Walden By Thoreau, By jennine

It's never a very thrilling introduction for a book to be described as  "a journal of a man in solitude, written in the form of short essays."  None the less, Walden, written by Henry David Thoreau is a mountain of a book to get through. ( I feel more inclined to say a vast field that goes on forever in no particular direction and 300 pages later you are back where you started.)  Some may suggest this is the work of a complete genius who required complete submersion in a life like 'test', others feel this could have been a desperate attempt to run from or confront homosexuality, and others yet feel this was just some guy writing a book that needed more attention in the editing department.

Having said that, I am coining Thoreau the most quotable man on earth.  Never have I dog-eared so many pages in a book I absolutely dreaded picking up every time.

A brief synopsis would have me say, this book is the deeply thorough thoughts of a man who chooses to live in isolation near a pond in the woods.  He was educated and social.  He visits town every other day, becomes very close to nature around him and has numerous guests coming and going.  As you read through the book, you'll find yourself wondering if this man is a complete hypocrite.  Read on, you may find Thoreau is onto something else.

And now to share some of those quotes which perhaps demonstrate that Thoreau was not only wise beyond his 20 and 9 years when he wrote this book but just how insightful one can become...alone in the bush.

"It is not all books that are as dull as their readers."

"Sha'll a man go and hang himself because he belongs to a race of pygmies, and not be the best pygmy that he can?"

"As he made no compromises with Time, Time kept out of his way..."

I have to admit, in hind sight, this book is truly impressive.  Proud to have read it, I only recommend it to those up for the challenge.  This book is not for the faint at heart and requires x amount of patience.

Please enjoy the adventures and invaluable advise of Madame Tops.  A free, on going service compliments of the Hairy Faery.  Don't hesitate to be offended(after all it's just some good honest advise that your mother never told you), outraged at the fashion crimes or provoked to clean out the wardrope.

Sheet Stealer

To Whom It May Concern.

If you recently found yourself located in my back yard and happened also to find yourself removing a set of snake print bed sheets and quilt cover off the line in which I chose to hang a set of snake print bed sheets and quilt cover consider yourself caught.

Yes, I am reporting your thievery to the entire world.  No longer will people hang their new bed sheets on the line, as it is no longer safe.

I am giving you, Sheet Stealer, an opportunity to right your wrong, a chance to sleep at night. (You'll obviously have to find other bed sheets though) Just return my new set of snake print bed sheets and quilt cover and no further actions will be taken.

I do have one question, Sheet Stealer:  Why didn't you take the matching snake print pillow cases as well?

NOTE:  This is not a joke, if you are out and abouting or have seen a set of snake print bed sheets and quilt cover (sans pillow cases) Let me know!  You don't have to tell who you slept with when you saw them....

Runes In Nature

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a sucker for "hidden messages" and "underlying meanings".  I believe in universal energy and that there might just be someone (or something) trying to tell me something.

The reason I bring this up is because, during a transitional point in my life, when perhaps I needed reminding about inspiration, I found it odd that I kept seeing the same message all around me.

I can't say that my "Rune Knowledge" is anything more than curiosity at this point, but I'm getting the feeling that that might change in the future.  For example, I pulled the bag of Runes off the shelf, reached in at random and grabbed one.  I used Brian Fround's The Runes of Elfland to help interpret the meaning etched into this now so significant stone.

Low and behold, I hand picked the Rune of Inspiration.  It' s gift "embodies the wisdom of artistry and the visions that may be found within the cauldron of inspiration."

Now to show you what I mean about seeing this message around me.

What do you think?  I would love to hear about messages you have received from nature!

Faery Cocoons

See what I found?  Baby faery cocoons.

As you may or may not be aware, Victoria has suffered much damage and devastation due to many bush fires that swept the land.  It is tragedy in its true form.

Many of the victims to the fires lost their homes, family and friends and numerous irreplaceable things.  One man in particular lost a lifetime of his work.  Here is a glimpse into what may have been the most AWEsome interpretation of Fae and other realms.

Seal Love

Baby seal pups picture courtesy of www.noaanews.noaa.gov

For book club this month, the group is reading the wonderful    Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.   For those of you who love animal stories, this is a must to put on your reading list.

I want to share with you a beautiful piece in the book that is labeled as "Seal lullaby"  It is sung by a mother seal to her pup as he is growing and getting ready to swim in the ocean.

Oh! hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,

And black are the waters that sparkled so green.

The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us.

At rest in the hollows that rustle between.

Where billow meets billow, there soft be thy pillow;

Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at they ease!

Storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee,

Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

What a beautiful, sweet song.  You can hear the melody as you read along.  And how adorable is the word flipperling!

What I love about books is, there is always a trail to follow.  When you pick one book up, it leads to another.  In the case of the Jungle Book, my lover recognised the story of "The White Seal" from his childhood.  So much so that he thought that an author had taken the words off Rudyard Kipling and used them in a children's book.  So off he went to his book shelf, only to find that particular children's copy of  " The White Seal", by Rudyard Kipling!

Anybody else read this as a child?                                                     (This picture is actually of the movie...)

Don't Forget To Breathe

Stop! It's 2009 and we are already coming into the third month, it is time to take a break.

Look at this picture of this calm, peaceful river.  As you sit at your desk in this hot Australian heat, imagine dipping your toe in ever so slightly.  Forget about the paper work and paying the bills.  Take your sandals off and walk through the shallow water. Watch the little fish swim around your legs and bask in the enjoyment of their playful motions. Allow the breeze through the trees to whisk away your worries of the day and breathe.  breATH. bREATHE.

Don't forget to breathe!
